Gymnastics – International School of Beijing (ISB) courses

Artistic Gymnastics at ISB on Sundays

The sport of Gymnastics derives its name from the Greek word for ‘disciplinary exercise’ and combines physical skills such as body control, coordination, dexterity, gracefulness and strength with tumbling and acrobatic skills all performed in an artistic manner.

Since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, gymnastics has taken these skill sets and given young athletes the opportunity to showcase their individual athletic prowess. Artistic Gymnastics can be pursued to the highest level, and is also the ideal sport for children to learn key skills that serve as a foundation for other sports.

In artistic gymnastics, athletes compete on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor. Our students will develop the basic techniques and movements first, and then progress to the various disciplines, using modified equipment, such as a low balance beam and assembling mats.

Our aim is to provide a structured program of learning delivered by qualified coaches in a safe and enjoyable environment. Our bilingual coaches have many years experience teaching young gymnasts, and many have had illustrious careers themselves at both the national and international levels.

This season, we offer gymnastics at 5 different levels, which are divided primarily according to ability. During the first class, our coaches will make an assessment of each student’s ability and recommend the most suitable class.

Beginner Level

Children who are brand new to the sport of gymnastics should start in the Beginner Level recreational gymnastics program, which is designed as an introduction to the sport. The initial focus in these classes is on increasing body awareness and developing agility and flexibility in preparation for more complex gymnastic skills.

Level 1

Returning gymnasts with some basic experience in the sport will join Level 1. It is ideal for those who have already completed the Beginner level with Sports Beijing. Emphasis will be on developing basic skills in tumbling and on the beam, floor, vault and uneven bars. On the vault, students will learn how to run and hit the board and several different jump positions. On the bars, class will focus on basic hanging and support skills. On the balance beam, students will learn how to walk the beam in many different ways as well as basic tumbling skills. On the floor, rolls, cartwheels, handstands and simple dance skills will be taught.

Level 2

Students aged 6 years and older, who have taken gymnastics class before and have mastered the basic skills, will have the chance to participate in the Level 2 Gymnastics class. Level 2 students will work on the same apparatus as Level 1, but with more difficult skills. On the vault, the students will learn dive rolls and handstand positions. On the bars, emphasis is on swinging skills, front hip circles, and squat on skills. On the balance beam, students will learn more advanced tumbling moves like handstands and cartwheels, and on the floor, the students will learn back bends, round offs and back handfalls over the barrel.

Level 3

Level 3 is an introduction to more complex routines that are used at the initial stages of competition. Aimed at students aged 7 and above, sessions are longer and are intended for those who have mastered the basic skills and who want to pursue  competitive gymnastics more seriously. On the vault, students will learn front flips and front handfalls. On the bars, focus is on tap swings, kip drills and sole circles. On the balance beam, students will work on full turns, split leaps, split jumps, as well as back walkovers and dismounts. On the floor, students will learn round off-back handfalls, front handfalls, split leaps and front flips.

Level 4/5/6

This program is for experienced gymnasts that love the sport and want to build up strength and confidence needed to learn advanced gymnastics routines within a fun, competitive environment. Gymnasts will practice on a 105-125 cm vault, with one of the core skills being a handfall to flat back. On the bars, emphasis will be placed on mastering two continuous glide swings, bar change, and a cast to at least 45 degrees above horizontal. Beam practice will work on perfecting stride leaps and a 2-3 running steps punch-jump dismount. Level 4 will also continually build on previously learned skills to refine them for competition-level performances.

Notes:

  • As every year, we will be holding evaluations at the beginning of the season to ensure that all of the athletes are training at the proper level. The following is the schedule for the first day evaluations:
    • o Ages 5-8 (Beginner/Level 1 time slot)
    • o Ages 9-10 (Level 2 time slot)
    • o Ages 11-12 (Level 3 time slot)
    • o Ages 11-15 (Level 4/5 time slot)

Beginner and Level 1 Gymnastics are suitable for both boys and girls alike in mixed classes. Please contact activities@sportsbj.com for more information.
