SBFC Shines at the LFIP Tournament

Sports Beijing Football Club enjoyed a fine outing at the Lycee Francais International Charles de Gaulle de Pekin (LFIP) football tournament over the weekend on Saturday, June 10.  Entering the competition for the 1st time ever, SBFC surpassed expectations with 4 1st place finishes from the 5 divisions offered at the Tournament.  Top finishers in each tournament division are as follow:

  • U11:  LFIP U11 1st Team
  • U13:  SBFC Piranhas-Shooting Stars
  • U15:  SBFC Strikers
  • U18:  SBFC Dragons-Strikers
  • Girls:  SBFC Groovy

SBFC entered their 2008-born Shockwave and 2007-born Bulls team in the U11 division.  Whilst by far the youngest teams, these SBFC teams battled hard and enjoyed yet another character-defining day of football as the youngsters continue to blossom as well-rounded footballers with the increased competition against older teams.

SBFC finished 1st and 2nd place in the U13 tournament division.  SBFC SuperKids gave their 1st place trophy to their younger football club counterparts, SBFC Piranhas-Shooting Stars, in an act of goodwill.  Credit to Coach Marwan of SBFC SuperKids, who have developed a habit for 1st place league finishes in the local Beijing International Junior Football League for making this decision.

Moving up a tournament division, SBFC Selecao and SBFC Strikers battled it out in U15 division.  SBFC Strikers, led by SBFC Football Manager and Head Coach Will Panza, in his final tournament, did not disappoint.  After dominant wins in the group stages, the Strikers edged out a strong LFIP U15 1st team in the Cup Final, courtesy of midfielder Otto Schroeter, who struck the decisive goal with 4 minutes remaining in the final to seal the U15 trophy amid a crowd of spectators surrounding the field and eagerly looking on.

After a claiming clinching 1st place the Strikers players, many whom will be leaving Beijing this summer, celebrated in appropriate fashion with a dog pile on top of each other!

Sometimes words don’t convey enough to represent excitement and emotion, so the players took to a jubilant celebration of joy, with the coach, after the final whistle!

One for the memories. SBFC Strikers pose with their 1st place trophy, whilst the U15 LFIP Tournament MVP, Navid Gerig, proudly holds both trophies after the tournament closing ceremony.

Going up yet another tournament division, a united team SBFC Dragons and Strikers, played their hearts out and finished in 1st place under the guidance of veteran volunteer coach, Stuart Lennie.  Even more astonishing, the team had no subs against their adversaries!  Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament!

Brothers in arms. The combined squad of SBFC Dragons and Strikers won the U18 division as dark horses.

In a Girls scene that is beginning to blossom in Beijing, SBFC’s Girls Development team, Groovy, blew away the competition without conceding a single goal to capture 1st place with interim Head Coach, Will Panza, steering the team to glory.

Sports Beijing Football Club would like to thank the LFIP for organizing the end of season tournament on the final weekend of competitive matches for the club.  SBFC looks forward to returning next year!!!  A few more snaps from the tournament action below:
