Travel teams from around China, most notably AKSIL and Shanghai United International School, descended upon the capital city to compete with Beijing’s finest youth teams to battle it out for silverware and bragging rights.  Old rivalries were renewed, and familiar faces returned to Beijing as the international youth football community continues to become more interconnected.

An army of Sports Beijing volunteer parents greeted the congregating masses of competing teams at registration tables early Saturday morning before official matches went underway.  With teams set to play, parents ready to cheer and coaches focused on guiding their teams to victory, referees’ whistles blew to signal the start of the 1st round of competitive matches.

The 38 C Saturday temperature did not stop players from pouring 100% effort into every group match to ensure their team would qualify for the division positions for the knock-out stages on Sunday.  Saturday’s formula for success came down to proper hydration, player management, and with all tournaments – a bit of intangible luck.

More penalty shoot-outs occurred as some weaker teams on paper caused upsets by tactically holding off opponents to let match results be decided by which players’ nerves could be maintained the longest with the pressure and implications that comes with each penalty shot.
